Immortalized Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) have been genetically modified through the transfection of either human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) or Simian Virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen. These transfection methods extend the lifespan of the cells by preventing senescence, thereby allowing for continuous proliferation in vitro. The immortalization process retains the cells’ multipotency, enabling them to differentiate into various cell types such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes.
