Kelly Human Neuroblastoma Cells carry N-myc amplification and are useful for tumorigenesis models and evaluating neural crest-derived cancers.

Description

Kelly is a human neuroblastoma cell line originally derived from the tumor of a 1-year-old female patient. It exhibits neuronal morphology with adherent growth properties and a doubling time of approximately 24–30 hours. Kelly cells harbor MYCN proto-oncogene amplification a key driver of aggressive neuroblastoma. The line expresses key neuroblastoma-associated markers, including GD2, NB84, and nestin, characteristic of neural crest origin. The cell line is near-diploid with chromosomal abnormalities including 1p36 deletion and 17q gain, leading to elevated N-myc RNA and protein expression, which correlates with high-risk neuroblastoma phenotypes. Kelly cells are tumorigenic and demonstrate metastatic potential in preclinical in vivo models, displaying aggressive migration behavior and sensitivity to MYCN-targeting therapies. This line serves as a clinically relevant model to study MYCN-driven tumor biology, differentiation, and response to therapeutics in pediatric neuroblastoma.

Application

  • The Kelly cell line is a valuable tool in neuroblastoma research, particularly for studying the molecular mechanisms of MYCN-driven tumorigenesis and evaluating therapeutic strategies. Researchers have utilized Kelly cells to investigate the role of polysialic acid (PSA) in regulating tumor cell growth and neuronal differentiation via neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) signaling disruption. Additionally, the Kelly cell line has been instrumental in exploring the inhibitory role of protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP1 in Ret oncogene activity, providing valuable insights into oncogenic signaling pathways. These applications provide critical insights into preclinical drug screening, gene function ayalysis, and the exploration of novel neuroblastoma treatment modalities.
